Oral history interview with Sam Lawson, Dec. 24, 1978.

Lawson discusses various people in Seattle's Jewish community and Congregation Bikur Cholim Machzikay Hadath. He recalls Rabbi Wohlgelernter, describing his involvement during World War II with European Jews who journeyed through Russia, China, and Japan to reach Seattle; his work in Europe with the Vaad Hatzala Holocaust rescue effort; and his conflicts with Rabbi Chaim Levin, who filled Wohlgelernter's position during World War II. Lawson also discusses renowned Jewish scholar Chofetz Chiam, journalist Ed Guthman, Reb Aryeh Levin, the Gershon family, and Charles Miller and Reuben Steinberg - past presidents of Bikur Cholim.

Edwin O. Guthman (b. 1919) served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and Harvard University. From 1941 to 1947, he was a reporter for the Seattle Star, and from 1947 to 1961, he reported for the Seattle Times. In 1950, Guthman won the Pulitzer Prize for National reporting.
